One important development in the longevity of a
Polytunnel is
Anti Hot Spot Tape. A typical
polytunnel is made up of tubular steel frame covered over with a thick (~200 micron)
polythene sheet. Under the blazing summer sunshine considerable heat can build up in the steel work (hoops, braces, and ridges) which, when in contact with the polythene sheet, reduces its lifetime by at least one year as the excessive heat oxidises the UV stabilisers.
Anti hot spot tape is included with most polytunnel packages, but can be purchased for pennies per metre. Basically all anti hot spot tape does is separate and
insulate the steelwork of a polytunnel from the polythene cladding. As this tape is designed to be much smoother than the steel work it covers, it also helps to prevent the cover being snagged and worn as it rubs the steelwork. This adhesive foam tape should last up to
10 years before it needs replacing.
