Greenhouse Thermometer
Use a suitable max min thermometer to track temperatures in a greenhouse
Greenhouse Thermometer
greenhouse | building | grow your ownEven in the UK it is possible for a
greenhouse to get much too hot (unless suitable
greenhouse ventilation is used), and certainly too cold (if
greenhouse heating is not used and delicate seedlings are planted during the winter months). A small but vital tool in the gardeners armoury is a suitable
thermometer.
Greenhouse Thermometer
It is possible to buy so called
greenhouse thermometers at garden centres and online, but any thermometer which meets certain conditions can be used. For use in a greenhouse a thermometer must have a temperature range down to -20 degrees Celcius, and up to at least
+50 degrees Celcius; it needs to have
maximum and minimum temperature measurement, and it needs to be
splashproof.
Pictured above is a typical
max min thermometer available for around
£10. With a pair of calibrated mercury or alcohol columns, the thermometer displays the present temperature in addition to the
lowest and highest temperatures recorded since the thermometer was last manually reset.
For a few pounds more, a digital
inside outside thermometer such as the one pictured above can be used. This will show the current temperature in the greenhouse and outside in addition to recording the maximum and minimum temperatures both in the greenhouse and outside.
More advanced digital thermometers are available which also display
humidity levels which is useful information, particularly with
hydroponics.
