Build a Pallet Shed

Build yourself a shed from used pallets

Build A Pallet Shed

A Shed or outhouse is vital for anyone considering a self-sufficient lifestyle. Tools need a safe, dry environment, and it is also essential to have a cool dark location to over-winter crops such as apples.

Sheds and other garden buldings can be purchased relatively cheaply (e.g. from just £99 for a 6 x 4 foot model) to many thousands of pounds for larger models, however most sheds on sale at DIY stores and garden centres are not up to the job. They tend to be poorly constructed from weak materials. Besides which, if you want to be self-sufficient, you should really be building your own shed - ideally from recycled materials!

Pallet Shed in construction.

A Pallet Shed (pictured above during construction) as its name suggests is a shed built out of old wooden pallets. Pallets are available very cheaply from nothing at all to at most a couple of pounds each. Usually made of fairly good quality treated wood, they are absolutely ideal for building the main structure of a large long-life shed.

Good quality pallets are used for the carcas of the shed to ensure good strength, and any weak or damaged pallets are broken up and the wood they contain used to fill in the gaps and provide weather protection. For a very water-tight shed, marine plywood can be used to cover the walls of the shed, as it is for the sloping roof of the shed.

Some plywood, roof felt, a couple of hinges for the door, and a few Kg of screws and nails is all that is necessary to build an amazing cheap recycled shed to your own exact specifications.
